“…Child maltreatment (CM) is prevalent among U.S. youth and has been identified as an important predictor of fair or poor health; depression; and current substance use, including cigarettes, alcohol, and other illegal substances (Hussey et al, 2006). Alcohol use often serves as a maladaptive coping strategy for victims of CM (Filipas and Ullman, 2006), and its use may differ based on its motivations (Grayson and Nolen-Hoeksema, 2005).…”

“…This approach could be considered a limitation of our study because it inflates the number of children affected (compared with substantiated reports, which were 71% of allegations), yet research suggests that child outcomes are indistinguishable based on substantiation status. 59 In our study, surveillance by home visitors may have led to elevated reporting levels in the intervention group only, 24,36 which may partially explain our finding that children of depressed mothers were reported more often in the intervention group than the control group. Indeed, the more services a young mother received, the higher the likelihood that her child was reported to be a victim of maltreatment.…”

“…45 , 47,48 In part, this is because child maltreatment is difficult to measure: CPS reports typically underestimate actual incidence because it is dependent on the vigilance of reporters, the resources of public agencies, and state statutes. 59 Cases of neglect, which constitute 97% of our maltreatment cases, are especially difficult to identify.…”

“…Além disso, outros fatores envolvendo vulnerabilidade infantil também estão associados a maus tratos, como por exemplo, ser uma criança recém nascida, adotada, viver em um abrigo ou sistema de detenção compulsória ou ter algum tipo de retardo mental (Hussey, Chang, & Kotch, 2006). Alguns autores consideram a existência de predisposição para a agressão, associada a fatores externos como o contexto familiar, comunitário e cultural (Dahlberg & Krug, 2007).…”
