Childhood maltreatment is associated with gray matter volume abnormalities in patients with first-episode depression

“…These findings align with previous research associating maltreatment with poorer global cognition, memory, working memory, and processing speed in adults with MDD and other psychiatric disorders (Grassi-Oliveira et al ., 2008; Bucker et al ., 2013; Miller et al ., 2015; Masson et al ., 2016; Dannehl et al ., 2017; Saleh et al ., 2017), as well as previous work associating maltreatment with abnormal brain structure and functioning in frontal, limbic, and medial temporal regions underlying cognition (Dannlowski et al ., 2012; Lim et al ., 2014; Philip et al ., 2014). Such structural and functional changes intersect with those commonly reported in MDD (Sacher et al ., 2012); indeed, neuroimaging studies have found that maltreatment is independently associated with fronto-limbic abnormalities previously thought to be specific to depression (Opel et al ., 2014; Yang et al ., 2017). These studies provide a neurobiological context for our findings that cognitive deficits are more severe in DM+ participants.…”
