Licorice (Glycyrrhiza species) is an important natural product that is frequently used in traditional Chinese medicine. In this review article, we discuss the quality control of licorice using monoclonal antibodies against the licorice components glyzyrrhizin (GC) and liquiritin (Liq); the monitoring of licorice extract activity using an assay system in mice; and the isolation of two active phenolic components, isolitiritigenin and formononetin, and their effectiveness for improving in vitro fertilization in mice. Finally, we present the outstanding questions and potential applications of licorice root extract.

A polycystás ovarium szindróma a nők leggyakoribb endokrin és anyagcsere-betegsége. A szindróma gyakran társul elhízással, hyperinsulinaemiával, növeli a cukorbetegség, a lipidanyagcsere-zavarok és a cardiovascularis betegségek kockázatát. Tekintettel a kórkép komplex megjelenésére és a terápiás eljárásokban jelenleg tapasztalható jelentős eltérésekre, a betegek gondozásához, az optimális terápia megválasztásához interdiszciplináris, gyermekgyógyász, belgyógyász, nőgyógyász, endokrinológus, bőrgyógyász, pszichológus és onkológus együttműködése és a rendelkezésre álló legmagasabb bizonyítékon alapuló preventív és terápiás technológiák alkalmazása szükséges, amely a diagnosztikus eredményeket és a beteg preferenciáit is fi gyelembe veszi. Ezzel javulna a terápia eredményessége, hatékonysága, a betegek biztonsága, életminősége és várható élettartama. A cikk a rendelkezésre álló legmagasabb bizonyítékok, szisztematikus irodalmi áttekintések és metaanalízisek felhasználásával ismerteti a kórképhez társuló klinikai és anyagcsere-szövődmények megelőzéséhez és terápiájához szükséges bizonyítékokat és a bizonyítékokon alapuló ellátás alapelveit. The syndrome is often associated with obesity, hyperinsulinemia and adversely affects endocrine, metabolic, and cardiovascular health. The complex feature of the syndrome requires an interdisciplinary approach to treatment, where cooperation of paediatrician, internist, gynaecologist, endocrinologist, dermatologist, psychologist and oncologist is essential. The prevention and the treatment should be based on the best available evidence. This should include physical examination, laboratory tests for hormones, serum insulin, glucose, lipids, in addition patient's preferences should be considered, too. To maximise health gain of polycystic ovarian syndrome, adequate, effective, effi cient and safe treatment is necessary. This article summarises the highest available evidence provided by meta-analyses and systematic reviews of the prevention of metabolic and cardiovascular complications of the syndrome, and discusses the relevant evidence published in the literature.

Objective. Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a common and multifactorial disease associated with female factor infertility. Ulmus minor bark (UMB) is one of the medicinal plants used in Persian folklore as a fertility enhancer. In the current study, we aimed to elucidate the effect of UMB hydro-alcoholic extract on histological parameters and testosterone condition in an experimental model of PCOS rats.Methods. Thirty female rats were randomly divided into five groups: (1) control, (2) vehicle, (3) PCOS/50 mg [6 mg/kg dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) + 50 mg/kg UMB hydro-alcoholic extract], (4) PCOS/150 mg (6 mg/kg DHEA + 150 mg/kg UMB hydro-alcoholic extract), and (5) PCOS (6 mg/kg DHEA). All interventions were performed for 21 days. Afterwards, stereological analysis was done for determination of ovarian volume and follicle number. The serum level of testosterone was measured by ELISA kit.Results. UMB hydro-alcoholic extract improved the total number of the corpus luteum in the treatment groups when compared to the PCOS group (p<0.05). PCOS/150 mg and PCOS/50 mg groups showed significantly lower total number of the primordial, primary, and secondary follicles as well as testosterone level compared to the PCOS group (p<0.05). The total number of antral follicles and volume of ovary did not differ significantly between groups.Conclusion. UMB extract may be an effective and good alternative in improving PCOS histological and testosterone disturbances although further studies are warranted to confirm the safety of UMB plant in human.
