Chiral lyotropic chromonic liquid crystals composed of disodium cromoglycate doped with water-soluble chiral additives

Abstract: We investigated the pitches of cholesteric liquid crystals prepared by mixing disodium cromoglycate (DSCG) in water with 5 different water-soluble chiral additives. The measurements are based on the Grandjean-Cano wedge cell method. Overall, the twisting effect is weak, and the shortest pitch of 2.9 ± 0.2 μm is obtained using trans-4-hydroxy-l-proline, by which the cholesteric sample is iridescent at certain viewing angles. Freeze-fracture transmission electron microscopy (FFTEM) was also performed for the fir… Show more

“…For chiral mixtures DSCG was dissolved in 10%w/w L‐alanine water solution following literature. [ 20–23 ] Oxazine perchlorate (less than 1‰ w/w) was added to DSCG solution. For KCl tests the L‐alanine was prepared in 0.1 and 0.01 m KCl solutions.…”

“…Additives such as ions and water-soluble organic molecules can have an impact on the transition concentration of 5 0 DSCG from isotropic solutions to nematic liquid crystal phases. 13,17,23,[30][31][32] The isodesmic assembly formation is predicted to be a step towards the formation of the LC phase as these isodesmic assemblies align in solution. 13,14,27 However, the extensive studies and characterization of these isodesmic assemblies are lacking.…”
