Chiral symmetry restoration versus deconfinement in heavy-ion collisions at high baryon density

Abstract: We study the production of strange hadrons in nucleus-nucleus collisions from 4 to 160 A GeV within the Parton-Hadron-String Dynamics (PHSD) transport approach that is extended to incorporate essentials aspects of chiral symmetry restoration (CSR) in the hadronic sector (via the Schwinger mechanism) on top of the deconfinement phase transition as implemented in PHSD. Especially the K + /π + and the (Λ + Σ 0 )/π − ratios in central Au+Au collisions are found to provide information on the relative importance of … Show more

“…We recall that clear signals have been found before in the strange meson and baryon rapidity distributions [12,14] and one might speculate if a similar signal can be seen in the antibaryon sector. To this aim we perform transport calculations-including the BB ↔ 3M channels specified above-with different settings:…”

“…(i) the formation of an initial partonic phase with quark and gluon quasiparticle properties that are fitted to lattice QCD results in thermodynamic equilibrium, (ii) a dynamical hadronization scheme on the basis of covariant transition rates, (iii) inclusion of further hadronic reactions in the strangeness sector with full baryon-antibaryon symmetry, and (iv) inclusion of essential aspects of chiral symmetry restoration in the hadronic phase [35].…”

“…However, no clear evidence has been achieved so far [16]. On the other hand, the strangeness production at Alternating-Gradient Synchrotron (AGS) and lower SPS energies was suggested to be a signature of CSR [9].…”

“…On the other hand there was no conclusive interpretation of the "horn" from dynamical approaches for HIC, like microscopic transport models [7,8]. Only recently, the Parton-Hadron-String Dynamics (PHSD), a transport approach describing HIC on the basis of partonic, hadronic and string degrees-of-freedom, obtained a striking improvement on this issue when including chiral symmetry restoration (CSR) in the string decay for hadronic particle production [9][10][11].…”
