Chitinozoa from the Early Devonian (Lochkovian–Pragian) Garra Limestone, central New South Wales, Australia

Abstract: Chitinozoa have been recovered from three sections within the Garra Limestone in central New South Wales, Australia. A total of 31 species are identified and two new species, Angochitina hypenetes and Bursachitina mawsonae, are described. Three stratigraphically distinct assemblages from the late Lochkovian to the early Pragian are distinguished and compared with faunas of a similar age from Europe and northern Africa.

“…Extensive studies on the conodont faunas from Australia (Mawson, 1987;Mawson et al, 1988;Wilson, 1989) have pro vided the stratigraphic framework for dating the samples. The conodonts show that the samples examined for foraminiferal linings are of Lochkovian, Pragian, and Emsian ages, which is confirmed by the chitinozoan faunas (e.g., Winchester-Seeto, 1993).…”

“…1979), molluscs (Hoare & Farrell 2004; Frýda & Farrell 2005), tentaculitids (Sherrard 1967), crinoids (Jell et al . 1988), foraminiferal linings (Winchester‐Seeto & Bell 1994) and chitinozoans (Winchester‐Seeto 1993). Specimens documented herein were acid‐processed in dilute (10%) hydrochloric acid at the Macquarie University Acid Leaching Facility by Brian D. Johnson in 1981 for his PhD dissertation research from two measured sections (sections G and GC in reference to the ‘Golf Course’), and additional material later recovered via resampling by students at the Macquarie University Centre for Ecostratigraphy and Palaeobiology (MUCEP) at the ‘Golf Course Revisited’ section (GCR in Fig.…”

“…It is characterized by grey to dark grey, highly fossiliferous limestones from a subtidal, shallow shelf. Studies of conodonts (Wilson, 1989) and chitinozoans (Winchester-Seeto, 1993b) provide a detailed biozonation for sections MUNG, RUN (pesavis Conodont Zone) and GCR (pesavis-sulcatus conodont zones). A section through the Martins Well Limestone Member of the Shield Creek Formation (MW) from the Broken River area of northern Queensland has been dated as spanning the pesavis-sulcatus conodont zones (Benson & Bear in Mawson et al, 1988), although all foraminiferal linings were recovered from the sulcatus Zone.…”
