Chitosan: A Promising Substrate for Regenerative Medicine in Drug Formulation

Abstract: Chitosan plays a most important role in the regenerative medication for wound healing. The adhesive nature of chitosan, with their antifungal and bactericidal character, and their permeability to oxygen, is a very important property associated with the treatment of wounds. Different derivatives and combination of chitosan have been reported for this purpose in the form of hydrogels, fibers, membranes, scaffolds and sponges. The purpose of the chapter is to have a closer look in the work done directly by differ… Show more

“…Chitosan-based drug carriers are a promising method for delivering therapeutic medicament doses into periodontal tissues. Table 4 shows advantages and disadvantages of different chitosan formulations Chitosan-based fibers, films, sponges, and injectable systems such as micro particles, nanoparticles, and gels are among the delivering modalities developed for sustained medicine release into the periodontal tissues [ 72 ]. Figure 4 shows different formulations of chitosan.…”

“…It also exhibits some antibacterial properties [7]. This antimicrobial ability makes chitosan a suitable candidate for implant coatings, wound dressing, and drug delivery applications, but chitosan has a major flaw which is its inherent mechanical weakness [8,9,10]. Many approaches, such as the addition of various polymers, [11,12] carbon nanotubes, [13,14] or clay nanoparticles [15,16], have been studied as a means to improve chitosan’s mechanical properties, and these additives increased the roughness of the scaffold which enhaced cell attachment, proliferation and differentiation [17,18,19].…”
