Cholangiocarcinoma in a 4-Month-Old Double Yellow-Cheeked Amazon Parrot (Amazona autumnalis)

Abstract: A cholangiocarcinoma was diagnosed in a 4-month-old double yellow-cheeked Amazon parrot (Amazona autumnalis). Histologically, neoplastic cells effaced hepatocellular architecture. Ultrastructurally, variably dilated bile ductules were lined by simple cuboidal to low columnar ciliated epithelial cells with sparse cellular organelles and prominent junctional complexes. Elongated single cilia arising from basal bodies in the apical cytoplasm were occasionally evident. The presence of such a neoplasm in a 4-month-… Show more

“…No bile pigments were visible inside the ductules. Gross and microscopic features of the tumour were in agreement with previous reports (Potter et al 1983;Allen et al 1985, Elangbam andPanciera 1988;Anderson et al 1989;Gesek et al 2009). …”

“…The prevalence of neoplasms appears to be considerably greater in psittacines, especially budgerigars, than in other orders of birds (Allen et al 1985, Anderson et al 1989Elangbam and Panciera 1988;Latimer 1994), but there are no reports of cholangiocarcinomas in pheasants and this case description of the occurrence of a cholangiocarcinoma in a two-year-old Ring-Necked Pheasant (Phasianus colchicus) is the first report of its kind.…”

“…Tumors of the skin and soft tissue were found to be common in humans and pet animals, and less frequent in captive wild animals (Naik et al, 1986;Agrimi et al, 1993). Hepatic tumors have been reported in captive wild animals (Potter et al, 1983;Gosselin and Kramer, 1984;Miller et al, 1985;Dillberger et al, 1987;Elangbam and Panciera, 1988;Anderson et al, 1989;Sakai et al, 2003). Dietary aflatoxin, viral agents and parasite infection have each been implicated in hepatic tumor in mammals and birds.…”
