Cholinesterase, Arylesterase, and Lipoprotein Parameters in Twins

Abstract: A high heritability estimate was obtained for serum arylesterase activity level in a series of 40 male twin pairs (23 MZ, 17 DZ) aged 33–39 years. The heritability estimated for Cholinesterase activity was strikingly lower. In unrelated individuals a positive correlation between arylesterase, Cholinesterase, and various lipoprotein parameters appeared to support the suggestion that these enzymes interact with various lipoproteins at the molecular level. The nature of these associations is not known. It is, how… Show more

“…line with population studies that have shown a statistical association of PON1 activity with HDL cholesterol, apoA-I, and apoA-II(38,41,42).Interestingly, our results in the multivariable analyses indicate that PON1 activity is a significant determinant of the severity of CAD independently of HDL cholesterol, HDL2 cholesterol, HDL3 cholesterol, apoA-I, and apoA-II. Recently, Rozek et al…”

“…I. Mackness, Arrol, & Durrington, 1991). PON1 is a calcium-dependent enzyme and is the most abundant of the PON family of enzymes that circulates exclusively with the HDL particle (Aviram & Rosenblat, 2004;Boman, 1980;Deakin et al, 2002;Khersonsky & Tawfik, 2005;Mackness, Durrington, & Mackness, 2004;Primo-Parmo, Sorenson, Teiber, & La Du, 1996). PON1 was first recognized for the ability to detoxify organophosphate compounds and its name was derived from a commonly used substrate, paraoxon (Aldridge, 1953a(Aldridge, , 1953bMazur, 1946).…”
