Choosing coaching frameworks for promoting diet modifications

Abstract: Theoretical frameworks have successfully guided researchers in implementing coaching interventions to effect dietary changes in adults for both prevention and management of chronic diseases. Three such frameworks include the Transtheoretical Model (TTM), Social Cognitive Theory (SCT), and the Theory of Integrative Nurse Coaching (TINC). This article introduces each theory, followed by an overview of the coaching interventions used to effect dietary behaviour changes within each theory. A condensed version of T… Show more

“…Operationalizing theoretical variables for application in research or practice is challenging. While there is little published research on the TINC, it has been used as a model in nursing education and practice (Burkhart, 2018; Ervin & Vienneau, 2019; Jackson et al, 2019; Thomas, 2017). Being based on a human energy field model, it has the capacity to address phenomena such as grief, suffering, and energy imbalance and others that are not sufficiently explained by a biomedical model.…”

“…Although there are published studies on the role of the nurse coach and the outcomes of nurse-led coaching programs, there is little research using TINC as a theoretical framework (Jackson et al, 2019). Recent meta-analyses note that most studies of nurse coaching do not have a theoretical underpinning and those that do are unlikely to use a nursing theory (Xu et al, 2017; Yu-Mei Chen et al, 2019).…”
