Chronobiological features of the immune system. Effect of calorie restriction

Abstract: The circadian organization of living organisms is fully established being a key component the activity of the neuro-endocrinimmune system that maintains the homeostasis. Secondary lymph organs, such as submaxillary lymph nodes and spleen, have been shown to exhibit a 24 h variation in blastogenic proliferative capacity and distribution of B and T subsets, with specific achrophases depending on the parameter studied or the lymphoid organ considered. However, less is known about the thymus. The immune system has… Show more

“…Under calorie restriction the use of energy is greatly reduced and the basal plasma levels of several hormones are altered [205][206][207]. Among them, the hormones of the hypothalamic pituitary gonadal axis have been extensively examined [208][209][210].…”

“…This is a model widely employed in studies on aging, since it slows the aging process in rodents (19). Under calorie restriction the use of energy is greatly reduced and the basal plasma levels of several hormones are altered (4,26). This prompted us to undertake the present study whose objective was to analyze the effect of calorie restriction on EAE induction in Lewis rats.…”

“…Under calorie restriction, plasma levels of several hormones are modified (Brogan et al, 1997;Chacon et al, 2002;Wronska et al, 1990). Among them, the hormones of the pituitary-gonadal axis have been extensively studied, mostly using single time-of-day sampling (Caprio et al, 2001;Clark et al, 1998;Sprangers and Piacsek, 1997).…”
