CIE 2017 color fidelity index Rf: a better index to predict perceived color difference?

Abstract: The CIE General Color Rendering Index Ra is currently widely and internationally used to assess the ability of white light sources to render colors. But over the past decades, there has been increasing evidence of its limitations. As a result of several years of scientific work, the Commission Internationale de l'Eclairage (CIE) published in April 2017 an updated calculation method. To reduce misinterpretation by users and make a clear distinction with the other aspects of color quality, the color rendering in… Show more

“…Studies on skin color observations outside of China tend to be more non-invasive ( 22 , 23 ). The measurement results are typically expressed according to the CIE L*a*b color system ( 13 ). The L value is positively associated with the levels of melanin in the skin and hemoglobin in the dermis.…”

“…Simultaneously, the color of lesions was measured with a chroma meter. Values of L, a and b, based on the Commission Internationale de l'Éclairage (CIE) system ( 13 ), were measured 3 times and the mean values were calculated. The L value represents the balance from white to black, with pure black being 0 and pure white being 100.…”

“…Phosphor-converted white light-emitting diodes (WLEDs) are a promising light source because of their small size, high energy efficiency, low cost, and color stability [1][2][3][4]. WLEDs apply the principle of complementary colors: Blue light from a blue chip is combined with yellow light from phosphor [5]. WLEDs have the potential to be used in solid-state lighting, but their luminous efficiency must be enhanced [6,7].…”

“…Another notable solution is apply hemispherical shell made from polymer with phosphor interior can allow the extracted radiation to excel [16][17][18]. Moreover, a structure with gaps implanted at the base can support radiant profiency by reflecting light that emitted downward [19,20]. Notwithstanding the structure of the bundle, the grouping of phosphor yield positive results on lighting capacity of the device.…”
