The occurrence of high frequency discharge bearing currents (also: "EDM-currents") that can occur in machines of inverter-based drives systems depends strongly on the value of the capacitive voltage divider BVR (Bearing Voltage Ratio) of the machine. This paper presents a straightforward approach to calculate the involved motor capacitances in order to predict the occurrence of discharge bearing currents in inverter-based drive system. The approach is based on the design parameters of the machine and does not involve additional measurements. It combines ease of application and satisfying accurateness and allows prediction of the risk of endangerment of an inverterbased drive system due to discharge bearing currents. A. Mü tze OVE Today, a search for bearing currents in databases on engineering literature may return hundreds or (depending on the database and any additional filter used) thousands of hits. The degree to which the identified papers address the bearing current topic itself varies. Often, the term is used (as it is common with key words) to reflect the wider context and the topicality of the work that is presented, e.g. a discussion of a new filter topology. Abstract-An accurate numerical model, based on multiconductor transmission lines (MTL) able to evaluate the voltage dynamics across the motor bearings and associated currents of an inverter-fed motor is presented. A full three phase stator winding of the wound type of a high power traction motor is considered in the proposed analysis. The different regions of the motor are modeled as suitable connections of lossy MTL which are then studied in the time domain. The per unit length characteristic matrices describing the MTL are accurately calculated by a FEM based software. The effects of the rise time of the input voltage and the length of the feeder cables are discussed. The reliability of the numerical results achieved by means of the MTL model is checked by performing a comparison with those obtained by considering a lumped parameter equivalent circuit.
