Circular Economy and its Prospects in Nepalese Agriculture

Abstract: ‘Circular economy’ in agriculture centres on the production of agricultural commodities using a minimal amount of external inputs, closing nutrient loops and reducing negative discharges to the environment (in the form of wastes and emissions). This can be achieved through the (re)design of maintenance, repair, reuse, remanufacturing, refurbishing, and recycling. Under the principles of CE, products and materials approaching their end-of-life stage can be regenerated or restored or replaced. Circular agricultu… Show more

“…What was earlier considered as waste or surplus, becomes a resource that is (re)valorized (Berkum and Den gerin k 2019). Circular economy in agriculture can be achiev ed through the (re)design of maintenance, repair, reuse, remanufacturing, refurbishing, and recycling (Bhattarai et al 2021). Using the principles of CE in agriculture provides a kind of solution to minimize waste in agrifood systems, while meeting the demands f o r f ood (E U 2020).…”

“…Therefore, the CE measures are closely linked to key EU priorities, including employment and growth, the investment agenda, climate change and energy, the social agenda and industrial innovation, as well as to global efforts in the field of sustainable development (Visan and Milea 2018). Consequently, new measures like environmental taxes, insurance for liability resulting from environmental damage, cap a nd trade system and environmental labelling can be explored to p ro mote t h e transition from a current linear model to a circu lar o n e (Bhattarai et al 2021).…”
