Circular economy in construction: A systematic review of knowledge gaps towards a novel research framework

Abstract: The current growing interest in the circular economy (CE) offers extensive opportunities to promote the adoption of more sustainable consumption and production practices across industries, which is a top priority in achieving the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals. The construction sector’s shift towards circular models is key to reducing carbon emissions and resource depletion but brings along considerable complexities and challenges, given the industry`s fragmented and conservative nature. “…The research suggests that future trajectories in the fashion industry will likely focus on developing secure, technology-driven circular models that prioritize both sustainability and data security. Gasparri et al (2023) provide a systematic review of knowledge gaps in the circular economy within the construction sector, proposing a novel research framework to guide future studies. The framework identifies three innovation domains-circular product, circular process, and circular platform-that are essential for the sector's transition to CE.…”

“…As a result of these trends, the amount of research into specific segments of sustainable construction has increased in recent years. More and more literature deals with sustainable building materials of plant or animal origin [18]. This issue is a hot topic because current crises have highlighted the vulnerability of construction economies, and the disruption of raw material supply chains has resulted in shortages and price increases of raw materials [19].…”

“…Among the different sectors, the construction sector is one of the largest emitters of carbon dioxide and consumers of energy. The sector witnessed a significant rebound effect, with higher efficiency achieved in the buildings outpaced by an increase in building space, which called for a specific focus on achieving an overall reduced carbon footprint (UNEP, 2022; Gasparri et al, 2023). In the paper titled "Assessing the Environmental and Economic Impacts of Adopting Circular Economy for Sustainable Resource Management in the Indian Construction Sector," which has been included in this special issue, the author(s) investigated the sector's environmental footprint as well as the potential benefits of adopting the instruments of the circular economy.…”
