Circularly polarized luminescence under near-UV excitation and structural elucidation of a Eu complex

Abstract: A new chiral diketonate ligand based on carvone binds early lanthanides. The Eu complex displays high circularly polarized (g(lum) = 0.82) red luminescence under near-UV excitation in the solid state. This is the first report on such CPL activity in the solid state with a rigorous protocol to exclude artifacts. Paramagnetic NMR spectroscopy revealed the nature and structure of the active species.

“…One is the chiral arrangement of achiral ligands surrounding the lanthanide ions, the other makes use of chiral ligands with an “antenna” performance . In spite of strong CPL signals being observed in solutions of lanthanide complexes, the solid‐state materials are preferred in many practical CPL‐related applications and especially for high temperature resistance . Unfortunately, the development of solid‐state, chiral lanthanide‐based systems is quite slow so far.…”

“…[12][13][14][15] According to the metal used, they have already found application not only in molecular recognition [16][17][18][19] and sensing 20,21 but also in catalysis (hydrolysis, oxidation, polymerization) 22-27 and bioimaging. [41][42][43][44][45] On a parallel track, in the recent years, we are assisting to a revival of interest in the well-known, and widely exploited in nature, imine condensation chemistry. In the presence of suitable chromophores, this phenomenon gives rise to an intense chiroptical absorption [38][39][40] which can be monitored by electronic circular dichroism (CD).…”

[41][42][43][44][45] On a parallel track, in the recent years, we are assisting to a revival of interest in the well-known, and widely exploited in nature, imine condensation chemistry. Imines are usually synthetized in mild reaction conditions, and they show a good stability both in neutral and basic environment.…”

“…in which I L and I R are the left and right polarized components of the emission, respectively. For nonaggregated organic molecules, common g lum values hardly go over 10 −3 , but it is possible to reach considerably higher values (0.1–1) for certain selected bands of chiral lanthanide complexes . In order to have small chiral organic molecules suitable for practical applications, such as circularly polarized organic light emitting diodes (CP–OLED), the design of chiral systems endowed with a high g lum is desirable.…”
