Circulating angiopoietin-like protein 8 (betatrophin) association with HsCRP and metabolic syndrome

Abstract: BackgroundANGPTL8 also called betatrophin is a regulator of lipid metabolism through its interaction with ANGPTL3. It has also been suggested to play a role in insulin resistance and beta-cell proliferation. Based on its function, we hypothesized that ANGPTL8 will play a role in Metabolic Syndrome (MetS). To test this hypothesis we designed this study to measure ANGPTL8 level in subjects with MetS as well as its association with high sensitivity C-reactive protein (HsCRP) level in humans.MethodsANGPTL8 level w… Show more

“…The varying results observed in the reported ANGPTL8 levels may also be in part due to other comorbidities that can play a role in regulating the ANGPTL8 levels. For example, it has been reported that ANGPTL8 level may be affected by thyroid function, polycystic ovary syndrome as well as metabolic syndrome (MetS) . We have also recently shown that ANGPTL8 was higher in people with MetS than those without.…”

When stratified according to the number of MetS components, people with higher number of MetS components had significantly higher level of ANGPTL8.…”

“…Betatrophin has recently emerged as an indicator of metabolic disorders, with two separate case-control studies finding that betatrophin levels are elevated in subjects with metabolic syndrome and hypertension [31,32]. A Chinese study of non-diabetic individuals found that circulating full-length betatrophin levels are an independent risk factor for coronary artery disease (CAD) and are positively associated with its severity [33].…”

“…However, the mechanism underlying these links is unclear, partly because of the lack of appropriate animal models and the difficulty related human studies. Recently, a large number of adipokines and cytokines have been reported to be related to insulin resistance and MetS, such as betatrophin, zinc-α2-glycoprotein (ZAG) and myonectin [3][4][5][6]. Therefore, investigation of the relationship between new cytokines and MetS has an important clinical significance.…”
