Circulating levels of receptor activator of nuclear factor-kappaB ligand/osteoprotegerin/macrophage-colony stimulating factor in a presumably healthy human population

Abstract: Objectives: To determine the ranges of variation of circulating receptor activator of nuclear factor-kB ligand (RANKL)/osteoprotegerin (OPG)/macrophage-colony stimulating factor (M-CSF) and to ascertain their potential relationships with age, sex and menopausal status in women, and with sex hormones in a population-based healthy cohort. Subjects and methods: Blood samples were collected with EDTA after an overnight fast. The plasma levels of each of the above biochemical indices were measured by ELISA in a tot… Show more

“…In line with our result many studies reported an increased level of OPG in postmenopausal osteoporosis [25][26][27]. Another studies proved that OPG is increased in diabetic women than non-diabetic subjects and its level is correlated with fructosamine concentration [28].…”

“…26 In our hands, the amount of circulating OPG resulted much higher than that reported by others, but it was consistent with the values obtained by using antibodies able to detect both monomeric and homodimeric forms of OPG. 28,29 OPG was significantly lower in neuroblastoma patients than in the healthy children, but no differences were found according to either the stage of disease or the presence of metastasis. The ROC curve analysis showed that all patients had abnormal values, suggesting that OPG measuring could be a useful tool for the differential diagnosis of small round-cell tumors in pediatric age, as well as for the identification of neuroblastoma with unusual presentation.…”

“…Our results of plasma concentrations of OPG in healthy subjects were in the range of those previously reported using similar anti-OPG antibodies to set up the ELISA. 56 Despite diverse patient profiles, the diminished CD4 þ counts in the HIV individuals studied (184±30 vs 500-1600/mm 3 in normal subjects) and the uniformly decreased blood concentrations of OPG were in accordance with the abnormal CD4 characteristics that define the HIVinduced disease. 23 Our OPG concentrations in plasma from HIV-infected subjects were different from previous data that reported a 52% increase of serum OPG in their cohort of HIV subjects.…”
