Abstract. Many coastal monitoring programmes have been carried out to investigate in situ hydrodynamic patterns and correlated physical processes, such as sediment transport or spreading of pollutants. The key point is the necessity to transform this growing amount of data provided by marine sensors into information for users. The present paper aims to outline that it is possible to recognize the recurring and typical hydrodynamic processes of a coastal basin, by conveniently processing some selected marine field data. The illustrated framework is made up of two steps. Firstly, a sequence of analysis with classic methods characterized by low computational cost was executed in both time and frequency domains on detailed field measurements of waves, tides, and currents. After this, some indicators of the hydrodynamic state of the basin were identified and evaluated. Namely, the assessment of the net flow through a connecting channel, the time delay of current peaks between upper and bottom layers, the ratio of peak ebb and peak flood currents and the tidal asymmetry factor exemplify results on the vertical structure of the flow, on the correlation between currents and tide and flood/ebb dominance. To demonstrate how this simple and generic framework could be applied, a case study is presented, referring to Mar Piccolo, a shallow water basin located in the inner part of the Ionian Sea (southern Italy).

Abstract:The reproductive cycle of the demosponge Hymeniacidon perlevis (Montagu) was investigated at the Mar Piccolo di Taranto (Ionian Sea, Apulian). According to the distribution of the specimens, along a bathymetric gradient, sponges have been subdivided in two groups, named group A and group B. The former was made up of specimens that are usually exposed in the air when there is a low water level and the latter by specimens that are constantly submerged. Monthly monitoring (February 2006 -January 2007 of twenty tagged specimens (ten in each group) was carried out in order to compare the reproductive efforts in the two groups. The reproductive pattern differed slightly between the two groups; the majority of the females in group B restrict oocyte production till May. In addition, group A exhibits a significantly higher density of sexual elements, than those belonging to group B. It was hypothesised that the sexual activity of the submerged specimens, living close to the soft bottom, could be influenced by severe anoxic crises due to periodic algal decay, whereas the intertidal specimens, located some decimetres off the soft bottom, and subjected to the moderate water movement, were not affected. The thick algal assemblage associated with the intertidal specimens gives protection against dehydration and solar irradiation during the prolonged periods of air exposure. By September, none of the monitored specimens had survived. The finding of newly developing small specimens in late winter supports a possible colonisation from residual sponge fragments dispersed before mass mortality.

Over the years, the growing development of coastal areas urbanization has led to marine habitat loss and degradation. With the continuous increase in population and industrialization, coastal zones are facing several issues arising from the continued decline in the quality of water and sediments and the rapid deterioration of marine ecosystems. Shipping activities exacerbate such a situation, especially in the vicinity of harbors, which are often affected by stagnant and contaminated waters, containing organic as well as inorganic substances. In Italy, although the environmental legislation does not appropriately consider the port as a water body, specific actions are required in order to properly manage these basins. In this regard, a 3D numerical model is firstly performed to detect the hydrodynamic circulation and the water renewal within a port in the southern Adriatic coast of the Apulian region (South of Italy). Then, some configurations of a possible technical solution, i.e. a pumping system aimed at improving water quality, are modelled. Specifically, the system consists of a pump that draws water from areas with less water exchange and enters it into areas inside the port with lower hydrodynamic circulation. The different results, in terms of (i) number of sinks and sources, and (ii) their location, are compared to obtain the best technical solution that enhances the water renewal and then improves its quality. The study allows readers to identify methods for proper planning and management of such shallow sea areas with low water exchange and thus highly susceptible to accumulation of harmful substances in the water, that are ports.
