Cisplatin-Based Chemotherapy for Merkel Cell Carcinoma of the Skin

Abstract: MCC appears to be chemosensitive but can progress rapidly with fatal outcomes. Although the rarity of these tumors precludes randomized trials, a common treatment plan should be utilized by those treating MCC. This may allow some conclusions regarding the optimum treatment of patients with MCC to be drawn in the future.

“…In our study, RT potentiated the effect of systemic CT, and a CR was achieved in 2 patients with locally advanced disease. This is in accordance with other reports that showed the radiosensitivity of MCC [11, 33, 37, 43, 44]. Mortier et al [45] treated some patients only with surgery and some others only with RT with similar outcomes.…”

“…In contrast, the role of systemic CT in the treatment of advanced disease is better established [11,32,33,34,37,38,39,40,41]. One of the most studied CT regimens was the combination of a platinum compound, cisplatin or carboplatin, and etoposide.…”

“…Clinical investigators have performed a large number of monotherapies or various combinations of surgery, RT and chemotherapy, but the stage, size and location of the tumours investigated has varied, making retrospective analysis difficult. Therefore, conclusions with regard to these treatment regimens in patients with MCC are controversial (9)(10)(11). It is important to identify the contribution of the treatment regimens.…”
