“…Published regional outcomes are sparse, but available data report crude regional recurrence rates of 0% to 25% (Table 3). 5,10,13,20,21 A series from The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center reported a lymph node failure rate of 16% (2 of 12) in lymph node-positive patients treated with therapeutic dissections with or without radiotherapy. 22 Allen et al published a single institution experience from Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center 5 including 252 patients and reported a 14% (8 of 57) regional recurrence rate in pathologically lymph node-positive patients treated with surgery alone and a similar 13% rate (2 of 16) in patients treated with surgery and adjuvant radiotherapy.…”

“…MCC is a rare but potentially aggressive primary neuroen-docrine carcinoma of the skin that presents most commonly on sun-exposed areas. Increased incidence is associated with immunosuppression, and MCCs are more prevalent in patients with HIV infection, leukemias, and organ transplantation (Miller and Rabkin, 1999; Engels et al ., 2002; Kanitakis et al ., 2006; Pectasides et al ., 2007). …”

“…Even with aggressive treatment for advanced disease, the prognosis for MCC is poor, with a median overall survival of 14 months. 41 The identification of polyomavirus as a putative causative agent of this highly aggressive tumor has opened the field to the possibility of new therapeutic targets, which may be of considerable importance in the treatment of these patients.…”
