Surgical reconstruction of large facial defects may not be always possible, therefore extraoral maxillofacial prosthesis is a good restorative option. The oculopalpebral prosthesis has a natural appearance however it can be easily noticed because its eyelids do not move. For esthetic purposes, it is desirable that the prosthetic eyelids open and close synchronously with the contralateral eye, which provides a challenge to the prosthetic reconstruction of the oculopalpebral region. To improve the esthetic outcome, an oculopalpebral prosthesis prototype with mechanical and electric features allowing synchronization of the eyelid motion with the sound eye was planned, designed, and built. An oculopalpebral prosthesis was made in thermoactivated acrylic resin. A gap was created to accommodate an electrical system and allow free motion of a thin eyelid made of silicone attached to the appliance. The movable eyelid was made with medical grade silicone (SILASTIC ® MDX4-4210) and connected to an electrical and electronic system responsible to command the opening and closing movements. This mechanical and electrical prototype with the system connected to a sensor, successfully captured the eyelid motion of the contralateral sound eye. The proposed mechanical and electrical system attached to an oculopalpebral prosthesis could successfully establish and synchronize the eyelid movements with the sound eye. pálpebras do olho acústico contralateral. This paper describes design of elderly-user-friendly multi-mode user interface with different modules. Use of eye glasses is common among senior citizens, and it inspired us to implement interface modules on it. Indicator-based Glasses contains the Eye Blinking Detection module integrated with visual cues indicators as system feedback. The multi-mode interface provides five interaction channels by proposing audio input/output modules and Android application on smartphone device. The VoiceXML Dialog Manager implementation (VoiceON) is described and proposed for speech enabled computer initiated dialogues. Senior citizens suffering from mild and moderate dementia are the primary target group of the proposed system. The human factors of the multi-mode interface will be tested in experiment with senior citizens, and different scenarios will be evaluated.

Owing to the rapid movements of the human upper eyelid, a high-speed camera was used to record and characterize voluntary blinking and the blink dynamics of blepharoptosis patients were compared to a control group. Twenty-six blepharoptosis patients prior to surgery and 45 control subjects were studied and the vertical height of the palpebral aperture (PA) was measured manually at 2 ms intervals during each blink cycle. The PA and blinking speed were plotted with respect to time and a predictive model was generated. The blink dynamic was analysed in closing and opening phases, and revealed a reduced speed of the initial opening phase in ptotic patients, suggesting intrinsic muscle function change in ptosis pathogenesis. The PA versus time curve for each subject was reconstructed using custombuilt parameters; however, there were significant differences between the two groups. Those parameters used included the rate of closure, the delay between opening and closing, rate of initial opening, rate of slow opening (nonlinear function) and the 'switch point' between those two rates of opening. The model was tested against a new group of subjects and was able to discriminate ptosis patients from controls with 80% accuracy.
