Transportation is an important resource for the sustainable development of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. It is of great practical significance to evaluate and study the law and mechanism of spatial and temporal differentiation of traffic dominance degree. Based on the methods of the Origin-Destination cost matrix, least squares method, and geographically weighted regression, this paper establishes a traffic dominance evaluation system at the county scale and discusses the spatial pattern and influence of traffic dominance in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau from 2015 to 2019. The results show that: (1) The overall traffic construction of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau has been accelerated, and the traffic accessibility between counties has been significantly enhanced; (2) The traffic dominance of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau is significantly different from east to west, and the central area, with “Xining-Lhasa” as the axis, expands to the outer circle with an irregularly decreasing spatial pattern; and (3) The effect of rapid urbanization development and population carrying capacity enhancement on the traffic dominance of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau has gradually increased, and the effect of elevation has been weakening from 2015 to 2019.

China’s National Key Ecological Function Zones (NKEFZs) currently represent the largest and most extensive ecological conservation policy in China, with one of the core objectives of this policy being to improve eco-environmental quality (EEQ). This study regards the establishment of NKEFZs as a quasi-natural experiment. Based on panel data from 130 counties in Sichuan Province from 2001 to 2021, a multi-period difference-in-differences (DID) model was employed to evaluate the impact of NKEFZ establishment on EEQ. The findings indicate the following: ① The establishment of NKEFZs can significantly enhance the EEQ of the covered areas, albeit as a gradual long-term process. This conclusion not only meets the parallel-trends assumption but also holds true in a series of robustness tests such as placebo tests. ② Mechanism analysis reveals that NKEFZs can enhance EEQ through the effects of optimizing land spatial allocation and upgrading industrial structure. ③ Heterogeneity analysis demonstrates that the beneficial effect of NKEFZs on EEQ varies across different functional zone types, geographic spaces and ethnic regions. Our study not only contributes to the accumulation of empirical evidence and institutional refinement in the sustainable implementation of ecological policies in China but also offers valuable insights and references for other countries in formulating policies for eco-environmental protection.

Environmental pollution of heavy metals in the typical coal industrial city should be paid more attentions nowadays. The spatial distribution and source apportionment of 8 heavy metals (i.e., Cd, Cr, Co, Zn, Ni, Cu, Pb and Mn) from topsoil samples (158) of Shizuishan city in Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region of China were investigated using principal component analysis/absolute principal component scores (PCA/APCS) receptor model and geographic information system (GIS). These results showed that the mean concentrations of Cd, Cr, Co, Zn, Ni, Cu and Pb were higher than their soil background values in Ningxia. 99.36% of soil samples were heavily polluted according to analysis of integrated Nemerow pollution index (PN), whereas 81.65% of soil samples exhibited the highly strong potential ecological risk by ERI (the comprehensive of potential ecological risk index) values. The source apportionment results showed that eight heavy metals in soil were mainly from natural (32.39%), industrial (26.56%), traffic emission/coal consumption (20.18%) and atmospheric deposition source (12.73%). Typically, Zn, Mn and Ni were derived from natural source, whereas Cr and Co were mainly derived from industrial sources. Cu was from the multiple sources, whereas Pb and Cd were weighted primarily from traffic emission/coal consumption source and atmospheric deposition source, respectively. These findings were crucial for the prevention and control of heavy metals pollution in Shizuishan city.
