Classification of Coronavirus Spike Proteins by Deep-Learning-Based Raman Spectroscopy and its Interpretative Analysis

Abstract: The outbreak of COVID-19 has spread worldwide, causing great damage to the global economy. Raman spectroscopy is expected to become a rapid and accurate method for the detection of coronavirus. A classification method of coronavirus spike proteins by Raman spectroscopy based on deep learning was implemented. A Raman spectra dataset of the spike proteins of five coronaviruses (including MERS-CoV, SARS-CoV, SARS-CoV-2, HCoVHKU1, and HCoV-OC43) was generated to establish the neural network model for classificatio… Show more

“…Due to the diverse molecular structures of different substances, Raman spectra exhibit unique characteristics. Its advantages, including convenience, speed, and non-destructiveness, have led to widespread applications and high acclaim in disciplines such as medicine [4,5], chemistry [6][7][8], and biology [9,10]. It is noteworthy that peak information plays a crucial role in spectral data, containing key details about the molecular structure and chemical composition of the sample.…”

“…Besides the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus (SARS-CoV) and the Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV), the new severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) emerged in China in December 2019 and has been responsible for a pandemic since then, leading to millions of deaths. Although vaccines were developed against this pathogen and most of the world's population has been vaccinated, this virus continues to circulate and evolve, and variations with new proteins arise [1][2][3]. Most infected people develop mild symptoms, but many health conditions have been associated with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID- 19), such as dyspnea, myalgia, cognitive impairment, and amnesia [4,5].…”
