Clearance of a Thick Invasive Squamous Cell Carcinoma After Multiple Treatments with Topical Photodynamic Therapy

Abstract: PDT may offer a noninvasive, well-tolerated, and effective therapy for inoperable low-risk SCC with an outgrowing pattern. It suggests that tumor depth is not an absolute predictor, but only a suggested reference.

“…Also for MAL-PDT, the efficacy of the technique is inversely related to the thickening of the lesion, as consequence of the physical ability of the luminous radiation to penetrate the skin. A study conducted on 95 BCCs of different thickness, stratified the results depending on the thickness of the lesion, as it follows: CR in lesions with thickness less than 1.3 mm, partial response in lesions between 1.3 and 1.8 mm and lack of response in those that exceeded 1.8 mm in thickness, with a two-year overall response rate of 75.8% [ 76 ].…”

“…Recent studies have compared excimer dye and metal halide light sources and red and green light, but the literature is consistent that depth of light penetration correlates with clearance rate. 34 One case has shown successful treatment of an SCC with 5.5-cm 5 It may even be considered as first-line therapy for large or widespread lesions or those in difficult to treat areas.…”
