Climate change adaptation and water saving by innovative irrigation management applied on open field globe artichoke

Abstract: The setting up of innovative irrigation water management might contribute to the mitigation of negative issues related to climate change. Our hypothesis was that globe artichoke irrigated with a traditionally drip system could be converted to an innovative water management system based on precision irrigation techniques and on evaporative cooling application in order to improve crop physiological status with positive impacts on earliness, total heads yield and water saving. Over two experiments carried out at … Show more

“…There are many useful approaches adopted by farmers, including abiotic factors such as altering planting and harvesting time, a collection of crops with short life cycles, crop rotation, irrigation techniques, and variation in cropping schemes. Under climatic stress conditions, all of these approaches are very beneficial for crop adaptability [112,113,114,115]. Modification in sowing time, application of drought resistant cultivars, and the cultivation of new crops are some important strategies to lessen the climatic variability danger and provide better adaptability to crop plants for assuring food safety and security [116].…”

“…The multiple-mediation models conducted by Haden et al [68] also indicate how suffering water scarcity in the past motivates farmers' concern for local water availability, and this increases their motivation to fight climate change. For example, a study conducted by Deligios et al [69] shows how, also in environmental limiting conditions, producers could opt for a significant saving in water supply to the crop in order to maximize and stabilize over seasons the crop yield, to obtain satisfactory yields. This better environmentally-friendly management of water, which combines tradition (social-learning) and innovation (water efficiency technology), can improve the quality of life for future generations and also increase greater public belief that climate change poses a serious threat to both farmers and themselves [70].…”

“…Tomato plants considered as a very important crop in the world as it contains a lot of bioactive compounds necessary for our health (Chaudhary et al, 2018). High temperatures especially in arid countries cause morphological, physiological and biochemical changes, which affect the growth and development of plants (Ohama et al, 2017;Deligios et al, 2019).…”
