Clinical and Bacteriological Profiles of Blood Culture Positive Sepsis in Newborns

Abstract: Neonatal infections currently cause about 1.6 million deaths annually in developing countries 1 . Sepsis and meningitis is responsible for most of these deaths. This study was undertaken to determine the clinical presentations, bacteriological profiles and antibiotic sensitivity patterns of isolates from blood cultures of neonates admitted in a tertiary care hospital in Eastern Nepal. All blood culture reports (n=103) during January 2006 -February 2007 from newborns admitted in neonatal division at BP Koirala … Show more

“…Our results correlates from the study by G. Karthikeyan et al who reported an equal proportion of EOS (50%) and LOS (50%) cases in their study, while the study by R S Jaswal et al (74%) and Shrestha P et al (66.9 %) showed a higher proportion of LOS cases. “…Culture positivity by conventional blood culture method was 13.3% in this study. A study from Chandigarh has reported overall blood culture positivity of 9.94% 18 which is less than this study. Culture positivity of enteric fever by the lytic centrifugation method was 17.3 % in this study.…”
