Clinical and epidemiological comparison of patients affected by palmoplantar plaque psoriasis and palmoplantar pustulosis: a case series study

Abstract: Our data suggest a close relationship between PPP and psoriasis. The existing data concerning epidemiology, clinical presentation, genetics, histopathology and pathogenesis do not permit a clear distinction between these two entities, which seem to coincide in many aspects. PPP appears to have a marked predilection among female smokers.

“…While these two types overlap clinically, some evidence suggests that palmoplantar pustulosis may be a genetically distinct form of psoriasis. 51, 56, 57 In this study we focused on investigating the effects that anatomical involvement of the palms and soles can have on QoL, but future endeavors to compare patient-reported outcomes between the two subtypes of palmoplantar psoriasis may provide further insight.…”

“…Another controversy is related to the classification of generalized PP alone or accompanied by PV as distinct subtypes with different etiologies [17]. Likewise, localized PP, which is often limited to palms and soles (i.e., palmoplantar pustulosis), has been regarded by several authors as a separate entity rather than a clinical variant of psoriasis [17, 18]. However, a close relationship between localized PP and PV is likely suggested by lack of significant epidemiologic differences, frequent coexistence in the same patients, and largely shared genetic background [18].…”

“…Иногда заболевание впервые возникало после длительного лечения пре-паратами лития. Курение и неблагоприятные фак-торы окружающей среды (высокая влажность и тем-пература) усугубляют его течение, также была выяв-лена более выраженная ассоциация между ладонно-подошвенным пустулезным псориазом и курением, особенно у женщин [1,8]. Отказ от курения был важным лечебным мероприятием, учитывая выяв-ленную аномальную реакцию на никотин [5].…”
