Clinical characteristics of renal cell carcinoma: Five years review from a tertiary hospital in Eastern India

Abstract: The age of presentation of RCC in India has been found in 5th decade, which is a decade earlier than the western countries. Symptomatic RCC is still majority in India. Organ confined tumors have good prognosis. When it metastasizes to lymph node or distant organ, the outcome is poor. Our results may form the basis for further studies and it may be used as future reference.

“…RCC is classified into several types: clear cell type, granular cell type, mixture cellularity, and undifferentiated cell type [10]. Based on literature searches, multiple pathogenic factors are related with RCC malignancy, including obesity, eating habits, smoking, drinking, and long-term exposure to radioactivity [11]. Surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, and immunotherapy are by far most commonly used therapeutic methods of RCC, but they have a small curative effect and a negative impact on RCC patients [12].…”

Ray in 2016 reported similar mean age of 52.79 ± 13.47 years among Indian patients with renal cell carcinoma while Oglio reported it to be 59 ± 12 years in Brazilian such patients 13,14 .…”

“…In the European Union, 84 000 new cases of RCC and 35 000 attributable deaths occurred in 2012 2. The incidence of RCC in Asian countries, particularly the Indian population, is lower than developed countries; however, data are limited 3. The reason for this could be that more tumours are picked up incidentally during abdominal imaging done for other reasons in developed countries.…”
