Clinical course and risk factors for mortality of adult inpatients with COVID-19 in Wuhan, China: a retrospective cohort study

Abstract: Background Since December, 2019, Wuhan, China, has experienced an outbreak of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Epidemiological and clinical characteristics of patients with COVID-19 have been reported but risk factors for mortality and a detailed clinical course of illness, including viral shedding, have not been well described. MethodsIn this retrospective, multicentre cohort study, we included all adult inpatients (≥18 years old)… Show more

“…fever, cough, dyspnea, myalgias, fatigue, and diarrhea) as well as laboratory abnormalities such as lymphopenia (18), although knowledge of the clinical feature of the disease is evolving daily (1,19). In severe cases, COVID-19 may present as pneumonia, the acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), with or without both distributive and cardiogenic shock, to which elderly populations with preexisting medical comorbidities are the most vulnerable (1,6,19,20). Notably while rates of concomitant infections with other viruses and bacterial superinfections in preliminary data appear low (15), patients with the most severe clinical presentations are likely still at risk for co-infections, and unsurprisingly, worse outcomes have been noted in such cases (20,21).…”
