Clınical, demographic and histopathological prognostic factors for urothelial carcinoma of the bladder

Abstract: IntroductionOur aim is to evaluate the influence of clinical and histopathological parameters, including age, gender, tumor stage, grade, tumor differentiation, necrosis, lymphovascular/perineural invasion (LVI/PNI) and concomitant carcinoma in situ (CIS), on outcomes of patients with urothelial carcinoma of the bladder (UCB).Material and methodsA total of 84 patients who underwent radical cystectomy (RC) (n = 11) and radical cystoprostatectomy (n = 73) for muscle-invasive bladder cancer at our hospital betwee… Show more

“…Five-year OS in this study (31.7%) was slightly higher than previously reported by another Polish academic centre (5-year OS: 25% [ 19 ]), but substantially inferior to large series from recognized centres reported in recent years [ 3 9 ]. However, in smaller groups from less well-known institutions, survival rates are also close to ours [ 20 , 21 ]. Many factors may contribute to such an outcome, such as advanced stage at presentation, delay of treatment, improper operative technique, perioperative complication rate or health status of patients.…”

“…It is well known that the outcomes of patients with BC depend on different clinical and pathological factors, yet these factors do not always reflect the accurate prognosis. Therefore, studies are in a continuous search for accurate prognostic parameters (Knowles and Hurst, 2015;Kucuk et al, 2015). BC is one of the malignancies with a high molecular heterogeneity.…”

“…Prognosis of MIUC is related to various pathological and clinical parameters and the most powerful prognostic factor is the pathological stage. Although these prognostic factors represent significant predictors, they do not provide accurate predictions for individual patients (Kucuk et al, 2015;Mitra, 2016).…”

“…We set a cutoff level to 50 years old based on a previous study (Feng et al, 2015). Since there have been reports that age and gender are associated with the prognosis for BC patients (Burge and Kockelbergh, 2016;Feng et al, 2015;Kucuk et al, 2015;Shariat et al, 2010), we took the clinical factors into consideration when performing multivariate analysis even if the results were not significant in the univariate analysis of this study cohort.…”
