Clinical Features of Craniopharyngioma With Tumoral Hemorrhage: A Retrospective Case-Controlled Study

Abstract: BackgroundCraniopharyngioma (CP) with tumoral hemorrhage is a very rare syndrome presenting with various manifestation and unfavorable outcomes. The current retrospective study was performed to summarize the clinical features of CP with tumoral hemorrhage.MethodsIn this study, 185 patients with pathological diagnosis of CP (18 patients with hemorrhage) were enrolled. Clinical characteristics, radiological and surgical treatments, and post-operative complications were analyzed. In addition, the correlations bet… Show more

“…Degenerative changes and immature blood vessels from tumor angiogenesis can lead to the rupture of blood vessels at the tumor margins and connective tissue, leading to ITH in CP. The histologic subtypes, coagulopathy, and hormone levels such as prolactin, TSH, ACTH, and cortisol levels have been incriminated as indicators for hemorrhage [15]. Our manuscript is a report of a single case.…”

“…[ 31 , 32 ] The patient’s craniopharyngioma had the potential to invade the hypothalamus and pituitary gland, which may result in complex postoperative complications involving electrolyte disturbance, endocrine disturbance, and subsequent hormone RT. [ 33 , 34 ] These factors could potentially increase the risk of venous thrombosis. Additionally, the patient had atrial fibrillation, known to increase the risk of thrombosis.…”

“…Therefore, the release of prolactin as a response to stress is of considerable clinical importance. Several stress models have been used to characterize such effects on prolactin secretion, including ether stress [262][263][264], restraint stress [265][266][267], thermal stress [268], hemorrhage [269], social conflict [270], migraine [271], and even academic stress in humans [272,273].…”
