Clinical features of gastric duplications: evidence from primary case reports and published data

Abstract: Background Alimentary tract duplications are rare congenital lesions, and only 2–8% of them are located in the stomach. Gastric duplications (GD) can lead to severe adverse events. Thus, surgical resection is required once the disease is diagnosed. The main purpose of this study is to describe the clinical features of gastric duplications and to provide evidence for the diagnosis and treatment. Methods A retrospective review of eight gastric duplic… Show more

“…The treatment of GDCs remains debatable, as there are multiple methods that can be followed depending on the size of the cyst and the patient's symptoms. While some authors advocate for conservative treatment, others promote surgery as a safe method to reduce the risk of malignancy [1,32,33]. Jai P. Singh et al described two cases: the first was diagnosed using CT and exploratory laparotomy, while the second was diagnosed through EUS, which provided higher accuracy in diagnosis.…”

“…At the moment, in the literature, there are two types of gastric duplication cysts: one type lacks communication with the gastric cavity or the tubular digestive tract, while the other type does communicate with the gastric lumen. When symptomatic, this type of pathology can cause a wider range of symptoms, such as persistent abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting or even life-threatening hematemesis [1][2][3][4][5].…”

“…Some authors reported a female predominance with a ratio of 8:1, while others observed a male predilection [12, 14]. In another study, Li et al [5] found equal gender distribution.…”

“…Based on age and lesion features, GDC can be associated with abdominal pain, hematemesis, vomiting, and weight loss. Although it may be asymptomatic in adults and pose challenges for preoperative diagnosis [5], GDC is often misdiagnosed with several diseases, like gastrointestinal stromal tumors and other gastric and endocrine tumors [1,6]. Its association with ectopic tissues of gastrointestinal organs or mimicking other anomalies, such as lymphangiomas, has also been reported [4,6].…”
