Clinical isolates of Tritrichomonas foetus in bulls in Wyoming, South Dakota and Montana, USA

Abstract: Background: Several Tritrichomonas species have been found in mammalian hosts. Among these trichomonads T. foetus is often found in the urogenital tract of cattle and the gastrointestinal tract of the domestic cat, resulting in sexually transmitted bovine trichomonosis and fecal-orally transmitted feline trichomonosis, respectively. The aims of the current study were to molecularly characterize clinical isolates of T. foetus in cattle populations in Wyoming, South Dakota, and Montana of the United States of Am… Show more

“…T. tenax strain Hs-4:NIH obtained from the American Type Culture Collection (ATCC, Manassas, VA, USA) was axenically grown at 35 °C for 5 days in a modified Diamonds’ medium as previously described [ 21 , 22 ]. The medium was supplemented with 10% heat-inactivated horse serum (Sigma-Aldrich, St. Louis, MO, USA) and penicillin and streptomycin (ThermoFisher, Waltham, MA, USA).…”

“…The causative agent of bovine trichomoniasis (Tritrichomonas foetus) is a motile protozoan that has nearly global distribution, with occurrences documented on every continent except Antarctica. 1,2 The protozoan is named for its three anterior flagella, one posterior flagella, and undulating membrane. 2,3 These anatomical structures give the organism its classic tumbling motility pattern.…”
