Abstract: We found variation in sleep promotion interventions across European regions with few ICUs using sleep assessment questionnaires or sleep promoting protocols. However, many ICUs perceive implementation of sleep protocols important, particularly those in central Europe.

“…Implementation of nursing procedures (including those aimed at improving sleep quality) is not exceptional (Hofhuis et al., 2018; Kamdar et al., 2016). Experimental studies assessing the effect of implementation of sleep protocols, with clustering of interventions being an integral part, also document the positive impact on sleep quality and quantity (Knauert et al., 2019; Li et al., 2011; Monsén & Edéll‐Gustafsson, 2005; Patel et al., 2014).…”

“… 6 However, sleep promotion protocol at the unit level is below optimum levels, in multinational studies outside the United States, only 10% of the ICUs have adopted sleep promotion protocol. 46 This is likely due to the higher priority patient care and monitoring required in the ICUs that contribute to frequent sleep disruptions. 5 , 31 To overcome such barriers to sleep promotion in the ICUs, implementation of structured sleep protocol could help change the unit workflow and environmental factors so that sleep promotion can become a part of the unit norms whenever possible.…”

“…Este conjunto de estratégias expostas vai de encontro ao resultado de estudos que abordam a utilização de máscaras para os olhos e tampões auriculares, na promoção do sono dos doentes, internados em Unidades de Cuidados Intensivos (Vieira, Ferreira, & Goes, 2018). A utilização de tampões auriculares é também mencionada no estudo desenvolvido por Hofhuis et al (2018)…”
