Clinical research activity in periodontal medicine: a systematic mapping of trial registers

Abstract: Periodontal medicine now constitutes an important part of clinical periodontal research. Research activity in periodontal medicine has grown continuously since the early 2000s, and exploration of registers gives a useful up-to-date snapshot of this constantly evolving field of research.

“…It has been proposed that periodontal disease, as a chronic infectious inflammatory disease, may be a risk factor for various systemic diseases, including dementia, although the scientific evidence is not conclusive. Dementia is considered a severe public health problem, with an estimated prevalence of more than 37 million cases worldwide that is expected to increase .…”

“…Interestingly and intriguingly, the paper of Monsarrat et al. () takes another approach by compiling a list of the possible links of periodontitis with other systemic conditions. Instead of using existing and published research, as was gathered in the joint EFP/AAP workshop, Monsarrat and co‐workers used modern bio‐ and medical informatics tools to tabulate from existing worldwide trial registers all submitted clinical research proposals on the topic of periodontal medicine.…”
