Clinical Research Informatics: Survey of Recent Advances and Trends in a Maturing Field

Abstract: SummaryObjectives: To provide a survey of the field of clinical research informatics (CRI), focusing in particular on significant developments over the past 3 years and the insights they provide about the progress and state of the field. Conclusions: This survey demonstrates that the field of CRI has matured and is now well established. The ongoing work is essential to overcome many of the challenges the clinical research enterprise is facing and more work is needed. Even as work continues to establish necessa… Show more

“…When implemented properly, electronic health records (EHRs) can improve safety and quality while reducing costs [1]. Likewise, clinical research informatics systems can extend the ability of clinical and translational researchers to advance health and medicine [2]. In addition, advances in bioinformatics improve our understanding of the human genome that can lead to new and improved tests and treatments for disease [3].…”

“…al. [5] surveyed clinical research informatics (CRI) papers published in scientific journal and conference proceedings from 2009 to 2013 and observed six common themes: 1) clinical data reuse for research; 2) data and knowledge management, discovery and standards; 3) researcher support and resources; 4) participant recruitment; 5) patients/consumers and CRI; and 6) policy, regulatory and fiscal matters. Large-scale, integrated data repositories are foundational for work in many of these areas, resulting in a growing number of academic medical centers assembling big data programs to support the local research enterprise.…”

“…The use of data derived from electronic health records (EHRs) for research and discovery is a growing area of investigation in clinical research informatics (CRI), defined as the intersection of research and biomedical informatics [1]. CRI has matured in recent years to be a prominent and active informatics sub-discipline [1,2]. CRI develops tools and methods to support researchers in study design, recruitment, and data collection, acquisition (including from EHR sources), and analysis [1].…”
