Clinical significance of STING expression and methylation in lung adenocarcinoma based on bioinformatics analysis

Abstract: The role of stimulator of interferon genes [STING, also known as transmembrane protein 173 (TMEM173)] in various human cancers has begun to emerge. However, the clinical value of STING in lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD) remains elusive. This study aims to elucidate the clinical significance of STING expression and methylation in LUAD. Here, through analyzing data from public resources, we found that both the mRNA and protein expression of STING were reduced in lung cancer. Moreover, lower expression of STING was as… Show more

“…The mRNA profiles of 118 TCGA-TET patients were divided into MTA3 High and MTA3 Low groups according to the median expression value of MTA3 and then processed and analyzed by gene set enrichment analysis (GSEA) as previously described [ 9 , 38 ].…”

“…Besides, An et al have found that negative correlation between the expression level of STING and its methylation level in NSCLC cells [ 35 ]. Conversely, a positive correlation has been observed between the level of STING methylation and poor prognosis in lung cancer [ 36 ]. It is reasonable to speculate that the expression of STING in cancer cell could lead to good prognosis for patients.…”

“…Another pivotal consideration is the expression of STING within tumor cells. Studies have revealed that STING expression is frequently downregulated in clinical cancer tissues, particularly in advanced tumor stages [ 32 , 33 ]. This diminishment in STING expression is often correlated with a poorer prognosis, as tumors exhibiting low STING expression tend to mount feeble responses to STING agonists, culminating in diminished therapeutic efficacy.…”
