Clinicopathologic significance of claudin-6, occludin, and matrix metalloproteinases −2 expression in ovarian carcinoma

Abstract: BackgroundTight junctions (TJs) are mainly composed of claudins, occludin, and tight junction adhesion molecules (JAM). The invasive and metastatic phenotype of highly invasive cancer cells has been related to abnormal structure and function of TJs, and with expression of activated matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs). The relevance of these mechanisms responsible for the invasion and metastasis of ovarian carcinoma is unclear. Similarly, it is not known if the expression of claudin-6, occludin and MMP2 is related… Show more

“…These results may suggest that the changes in these bacteria genera influence the differentiation of and functionality of the epithelial barrier (Wang et al 2013). Therefore, it is plausible that the preventive effect of cocoa and/or cocoa fibre on certain intestinal chronic/inflammatory diseases may at least in part result from effects on TLRs and occludin.…”

“…Claudin-6 is located at chromosome 16p13.3 and encodes a 219-amino-acid protein with a molecular mass of 23 kDa. 17 As an important component of TJs, claudin is not only capable of regulating intercellular material flow and maintaining epithelial cell polarity but also involved in cell proliferation, gene transcription, and tumor suppression. 18 Claudin downregulation can influence the initiation and progression of cancer by causing a decrease in cell adhesiveness and cohesion, variation in differentiation, and an increase in cell invasiveness.…”

“…Usually it is diagnosed at an advanced stage and, therefore, despite improvements in treatment, the survival rate remains low at less than 45% after 5 years [1-4]. Marked geographic variation in incidence rates suggests an important role of behavioral and potentially modifiable factors such as diet in ovarian cancer development.…”
