Clinicopathological evaluation and survival of patients with squamous cell carcinoma of the tongue

Abstract: BackgroundEarly detection of oral cancer is the most effective means of reducing morbidity, complexity, and extent of treatment. This study evaluated the clinicopathological profile of epidermoid carcinoma of the tongue, including treatment and survival.Material and MethodsThis observational, retrospective cross-sectional study evaluated patients with squamous cell carcinoma of the tongue treated at the Dr. Luiz Antônio Hospital, Natal, Brazil, from January 2001 to December 2011. Survival variables were calcul… Show more

“…Oral SCC remains as one of the most difficult malignancies to control due to its high tendency for local invasion and cervical lymph node dissemination, especially the tongue and floor of the mouth SCC 16 , 17 . This is the reason why its survival rates remain low, even with advances in therapeutic strategies 18 .…”

“…In addition to the biological factors of oral cancer, such as cellular aggressiveness, tumor size and presence of cervical metastases, socio-demographic health characteristics may also influence the incidence and severity of oral neoplasms (5-7). Oral squamous cell carcinoma is the most prevalent cancer type affecting oral tissues and advanced stage diagnosis of oral cancer negatively affects patient survival (8). Based on that, determining factors associated with advanced stage lesions are imperative to improve life expectancy of affected individuals.…”

“…Current therapeutic strategies for TSCC include traditional surgical resection, radiotherapy and chemotherapy. Despite advances in these treatments, there has been no significant improvement in the prognosis and survival rate of patients with TSCC over the past 10 years, due to lymphatic metastasis, mortality and recurrence (6,7). The rates of incidence and death remain high (8,9) and the overall 5-year survival rate is less than 60% (10,11).…”
