Clinimetric Analysis of Pressure Biofeedback and Transversus Abdominis Function in Individuals With Stabilization Classification Low Back Pain

Abstract: Approximately 30% of individuals in the United States experience low back pain (LBP) over the course of a year, with 5% to 10% developing chronic symptoms.48 Individuals with chronic LBP can benefit from exercise therapy interventions. 21,29A common initial exercise for individuals with chronic LBP is the abdominal drawing-in maneuver (ADIM). 30,33,34,37,42,52,56,66 This exercise is thought to selectively activate the transversus abdominis (TrA) muscle 19,34,49,55,[66][67][68] with minimal lumbar spine motion.

“…The ultrasound transducer was originally placed transversely superior to the iliac crest approximately 10 cm lateral from the umbilicus 42 along the midaxillary line. 13,19,43,44 Standardization for final ultrasound-transducer placement occurred when the fascial border of the TrA and thoracolumbar fascia was visible on the lateral side of the ultrasound screen and the best images of the TrA, external oblique, and internal oblique were obtained ( Figure 2). 13,15,43,44 Resting images were obtained through a static image immediately after exhalation.…”

“…13,15,43,44 Resting images were obtained through a static image immediately after exhalation. 43,44 Thickness measures for the TrA were reported in centimeters and calculated at the thickest position on the ultrasound screen between the superior and deep fascial borders, 13,19,43 while the total lateral abdominal-wall thickness was measured from the deep border of the TrA to the superficial border of the external oblique. 13,19,43 Two markings were placed opposite the transducer head against the skin to reference the starting transducer position ( Figure 2).…”

“…Transversus abdominis activation capacity, which we will assess using the Stabilizer Pressure Biofeedback Unit (PBU, Chattanooga Group, Australia) [34]. The subject will be asked to lie in prone position over a rigid surface, then a PBU device will be placed under the transversus abdominis.…”

“…Although cough is an important defense mechanism against respiratory tract infections and atelectasis, the capacity to generate cough and clear respiratory secretions is severely compromised in most individuals with SCI due to the impaired innervations of the abdominal muscles at most SCI levels [1]. The contraction of the transverses abdominis is thought to contribute to dynamic stabilization of the lumbar spine [3]. dyspnoea during activities of daily living is most common, among motorized wheel-chair users.…”
