Clonal population structure and introductions of the chestnut blight fungus, Cryphonectria parasitica, in Asturias, northern Spain

Abstract: To understand the history of introductions of the chestnut blight fungus, Cryphonectria parasitica, in the Principality of Asturias in northern Spain, we conducted an extensive survey of chestnut blight and collected C. parasitica from 216 sites. All 778 isolates were assayed for vegetative compatibility (vc) type, whereas a subsample of 301 isolates was assayed for mating type, and 189 isolates were genotyped at 16 microsatellite markers. We found low diversity for all markers. Nearly all isolates (95%) were … Show more

“…In addition to the vic genes, the host genetic background has been shown to affect virus transmission (Cortesi et al 2001). In clonal populations, the transmission of the virus can take place more readily between individuals due to the lack of genetic diversity González-Varela et al 2011). This may explain the better conversion rate with isolates from León, which included a small number of different vc types and only one idiomorph (Mat-1) (Zamora et al 2012).…”

“…Furthermore, increasing global trade in plant products carries the danger of introduction of pathogens, providing recurrent opportunities for new invasions [5]–[7]. These pathogens have the potential to cause severe economic losses to crops, ornamental plants, or forests, and can lead to severe problems in human or livestock nutrition [8][9].…”

“…Despite the importance of these invasions, relatively little is known about the modes, timing or frequency with which they have occurred. Knowledge of these factors is important for prediction, prevention, and response to additional introductions [9]; [14]. Molecular genetic data can be useful for the evaluation of the reasons for invasion success.…”
