Closing the Gap: Increases in Life Expectancy among Treated HIV-Positive Individuals in the United States and Canada

Abstract: BackgroundCombination antiretroviral therapy (ART) has significantly increased survival among HIV-positive adults in the United States (U.S.) and Canada, but gains in life expectancy for this region have not been well characterized. We aim to estimate temporal changes in life expectancy among HIV-positive adults on ART from 2000–2007 in the U.S. and Canada.MethodsParticipants were from the North American AIDS Cohort Collaboration on Research and Design (NA-ACCORD), aged ≥20 years and on ART. Mortality rates we… Show more

“…The significance of disease can be depicted by 35.3 million People Living with HIV (PLHIV) globally, 2.3 million new HIV-positive cases, and 1.6 million AIDS-related deaths in 2012 (2,3). Despite the considerable prevalence, incidence and mortality rate of HIV worldwide, it should be considered that recent curative methods such as combination Antiretroviral Therapies (ARTs) have changed HIV/AIDS to a manageable chronic disease and significantly increased the life expectancy among HIV-positive individuals under treatment (1,4). Evidence leaves no doubt that therapeutic interventions such as ARTs might influence the sexual activities of PLHIV.…”

“…Currently, HIV-infected patients who are treated with HAART have a near-normal life expectancy approaching that of the general population (2)(3)(4). HIV infection is the strongest risk factor for lymphoma with a 77-fold associated risk for non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) and an 11-fold risk for Hodgkin lymphoma (5)(6)(7).…”

“…In spite of these challenges, combination antiretroviral therapy has transformed the prognosis for patients with HIV [35,36]. Opportunistic brain infections have vastly decreased, and this therapy has resulted in almost complete elimination of HIVassociated dementia.…”
