Closing the Snack Bar: Developing Methods for Jackfruit Tree (Artocarpus heterophyllus Lamk.) Control in Brazil

Abstract: There are several techniques for the control and removal of invasive species that can be applied, and there is a demand among restoration practitioners for plant control methods. This study compared two methods for the control of jackfruit tree: mechanical method of trunk girdling and chemical method of herbicide injection into the trunk. It was evaluated both methods in terms of effectiveness in 10 plots (80 × 80 m). For the chemical method, triclopyr in concentrations of 2%, 6% and 8% was used. The progress … Show more

“…Artocarpus heterophyllus , reported to be invasive in 24 other countries, has been studied most in Brazil's Atlantic forests, where its invasiveness and negative impacts are well demonstrated and removal has been proposed (Abreu & Rodrigues, 2010; Bergallo et al, 2016; Gama‐Matos et al, 2021; Moura et al, 2020). In east Africa, it has been reported as invasive is the East Usambara mountains (Sheil, 1994).…”

“…However, the close association in some locations between the regeneration of the species and charcoal kiln sites and old trails is evidence that humans are the main dispersers of the species in this reserve. In its native range, it is known to be characteristic of advanced succession stages (Moura et al, 2020).…”

“…Due to its food use, the jackfruit tree was introduced in Brazil in the 17th century, and was later used in reforestation projects in the state of Rio de Janeiro (Pereira & Kaplan, 2013). Today, the jackfruit tree is widely distributed throughout the Brazilian territory and is known as an aggressive invasive exotic species in the Atlantic Forest of the Northeast and Southeast of Brazil (Fabricante et al, 2012;Moura et al, 2020). In addition, according to the national database on exotic species, jackfruit trees are present in 12 states (Hórus Institute, 2021).…”
