Cluster ions of diquat and paraquat in electrospray ionization mass spectra and their collision‐induced dissociation spectra

Abstract: Cluster ions such as [Cat+X+nM](+) (n = 0-4); [Cat-H+nM](+) (n = 1-3); and [2(Cat-H)+X+nM](+) (n = 0-2), where Cat, X, and M are the dication, anion, and neutral salt (CatX(2)), respectively, are observed in electrospray ionization (ESI) mass spectrometry of relatively concentrated solutions of diquat and paraquat. Collision-induced dissociation (CID) reactions of the clusters were observed by tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS), including deprotonation to form [Cat-H](+), one-electron reduction of the dication t… Show more

“…Ions formed by one electron reduction from nonmetallated dicationic species in solution were previously observed in positive-mode electrospray mass spectrometry for ionic compounds such as diquaternary pyridinium salts [11][12][13] and free-base N-alkylpyridiniumyl porphyrin salts [14]. One-and two-electron reductions of the cations of metallated N-alkylpyridiniumyl porphyrin salts were also reported, when electrospray was used in the positive mode [15][16][17].…”

“…When using acetonitrile CH 3 If we assume that such clusters are formed upon solvation, in a similar way as was described for dicationic°analytes° [35],°subsequent°electron°transfer°from the iodides would lead to the formation of the reduced species M ϩ and M 2ϩ . These clusters would exist in the°droplets°as°tight°solvated°ion°pairs° [11], [M 3ϩ ϩ2I Ϫ ϩn(CH 3 OH)] and [M 3ϩ ϩI Ϫ ϩn(CH 3 OH)] and the reduction may occur while these aggregates are still in the relatively high-pressure regions of the source [36].…”

“…This approach is based on selective host molecules for specific cationic or anionic guests, which can form ionic adducts with higher molecular mass. Most of the supramolecular complexes investigated by MS involve macrocycles, such as crown ethers and cryptands, which form cationic metal-receptor complexes detectable in positive ion mode [15][16][17][18][19]. Anion supramolecular chemistry [20] is relatively less well developed and oftentimes anion receptors are not as strong as cation receptors in terms of thermodynamic binding constants.…”

“…Quats exist endogenously within various tissues of the body (such as the central nervous system) and play a vital role in numerous biochemical pathways [1,2]. Additionally, they are frequently synthesized and routinely utilized in a variety of industries, with their uses ranging from personal care items such as antimicrobials [3][4][5] and antistatic agents [6,7] to herbicides [8][9][10][11] and pharmaceuticals [12,13].…”
