Co-infection with Streptococcus pneumoniae and Listeria monocytogenes in an immunocompromised patient

Abstract: A 34-year-old HIV-positive man with a history of chronic substance abuse was admitted with dual infection of Streptococcus pneumoniae and Listeria monocytogenes. Combined bacteraemia with S. pneumoniae and L. monocytogenes is very rare. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first such case documented at our institution and in South Africa. Few cases of bacteremia have been reported as well [ 103 , 104 ].…”

“…Another death case of listeriosis attributed to Listeria monocytogenes was reported in a newborn in Zimbabwe (Nyati, ). Also, a 34 year HIV positive male patient was reportedly confirmed of dual infection of Streptococcus pneumonia and Listeria monocytogenes in Cape Town, South Africa (Opperman & Bamford, ). In addition, Listeria monocytogenes were found in blood samples of two neonates (a day old child) and a 24 years old pregnant woman in 2015 during an increase in human cases of this pathogen in the Western Cape of South Africa (Smith et al, ).…”
