Co-prevalence of human Papillomaviruses (HPV) and Epstein–Barr virus (EBV) in healthy blood donors from diverse nationalities in Qatar

Abstract: Background: Infections by both human oncoviruses, human Papillomaviruses (HPV) and Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) are very common in the adult human population and are associated with various malignancies. While HPV is generally transmitted sexually or via skin-to-skin contact, EBV is frequently transmitted by oral secretions, blood transfusions and organ transplants. This study aims to determine the prevalence and circulating genotypes of HPV and EBV in healthy blood donors in Qatar. Methods: We explored the co-pre… Show more

“…Genotyping and detection of the presence of HPV and EBV was done using specific primers for high-risk HPV types (16, 18, 31, 33, 35, 39, 45, 51, 52, 56 and 58) of E6/E7 region and for EBV genes, EBNA1 and LMP1 as previously described. 40 , 41 GAPDH was used as an internal control ( Figures 1 and 2 ). Analysis was performed as previously described by our group.…”

“…The evidence for a causal role of high risk HPVs in prostate cancer is as follows: [21,47,48]. In addition, HPVs can be transmitted throughout the body via circulating extracellular vesicles and blood [69][70][71]. (vii)The oncogenic mechanisms for HPV oncogenesis in prostate cancer are not clear.…”

“… The most frequent means of HPV transmission is probably by sexual activity [ 21 , 47 , 48 ]. In addition, HPVs can be transmitted throughout the body via circulating extra – cellular vesicles and blood [ 69 71 ]. The oncogenic mechanisms for HPV oncogenesis in prostate cancer are not clear.…”
