Coal in the Global Energy Scene

Abstract: World primary energy demand is expected to continue to grow steadily, as it has over the last two decades. To meet this need, the world will have to make the best possible use of the various energy sources available, including coal, the most abundant and affordable of the fossil fuels. Coal is often the only alternative when low-cost, cleaner energy sources are inadequate to meet growing energy demand. Developing countries use about 55% of the world's coal today; this share is expected to grow to 65% over the … Show more

“…During the past few decades, petroleum has been the main source of liquid fuels. On one hand, petroleum reserves are declining; on the other hand, coal reserve is the most abundant fossil fuel known in the world [1]. Coal is a source of fuel for more than half of the world's power plants for electricity generation.…”

“…Although the development of new energy is in the ascendant, coal still occupies the main position of energy utilization (Balat, 2009;Zhang et al, 2017;Song et al, 2018;Li et al, 2019;Song Z. et al, 2021). The large demand for coal has led to the development of mining technology from the aspect of mechanization and automation (Fan et al, 2020c;Liu et al, 2020b;Liu et al, 2020c;Peng et al, 2020;Jiang et al, 2021).…”

“…6 At present, coal is the major source of energy and continues to dominate as a main contributor for energy generation in developing countries. 7 Pakistan has huge coal reserves that nearly approach to 185 billion tons in its different provinces, especially in Sindh. It is estimated that the recoverable coal reserves in Pakistan are about 1.45 thousand Mtoe with total production capacity of 2.33 Mtoe per year.…”

“…Coal is one of the abundantly and evenly distributed fossil fuel (~65% of the total fossil fuels) around the globe, unlike oil and gas reserves which are only present in a fewer regions of the world 6 . Pakistan has huge coal reserves that nearly approach to 185 billion tons in its different provinces, especially in Sindh.…”
