The gas content of coal seams in the South Palembang basin has been assessed using well log data and core analysis. The seams are stratigraphically exposed at shallow levels (<300 m), and present in the Late Miocene-Early Pliocene Muara Enim sequence. The coal thickness of single bed in each well varies between ~7 m and ~14 m. All samples analyzed are low rank coals, suggesting subbituminous and high volatile bituminous. Vitrinite reflectance (VR) measurements vary from 0.49-0.59%, but there appears an increase in the VR value with depth. The coals contain predominantly huminite (56-86 vol. %), whereas liptinite and inertinite are less abundant, ranging from 0.2-12.2 vol. % and 4.2-19.2 vol. % respectively. These low rank coals comprise a small number of minerals (6-11 vol. %), high moisture content of 2.4-12.6 wt. %, volatile matters of >39 wt. %, and fixed carbons of >43 wt. %. The amount of gas within individual coal layer varies from 4.1-5.3 m 3 /t, but the gas content tends to increase with deeper burial. The sum of the estimated gas-in-place is approximately 3,019x10 6 m 3 . In addition, the onset of gas generation within these near surface coals may occur due to biogenic controls during the coal-forming processes, as a result of sedimentation of the overburden in Pliocene time prior to the subsequent basin inversion commencing in the Plio-Pleistocene.

TX 75083-3836, U.S.A., fax 01-972-952-9435. AbstractIndonesia has thick, low-rank coal deposits that are prospective for coalbed methane (CBM) development but remain untested. Conventional oil and gas wells that drill through these coal seams experience gas kicks and blow outs, good CBM indicators. We analyzed petroleum and coal mining data to perform a comprehensive assessment of Indonesia's CBM resources. We identified 12.7 trillion m 3 (450 Tcf) of prospective CBM resources within eleven onshore coal basins. Full-cycle development costs in highgraded areas are estimated at $0.70/Mcf. These potential CBM reservoirs could be tested at low cost using coreholes or production "wells of opportunity."

Penelitian potensi gas metana batubara dilakukan pada Formasi Warukin di Cekungan Pasir, Kalimantan Timur tepatnya di daerah Batusopang. Penelitian ini dilakukan untuk mengetahui potensi gas metana batubara dengan menggunakan metode pengukuran slow desorption. Berdasarkan hasil pemboran di daerah penelitian ditemukan 12 lapisan (seam) batubara dengan ketebalan berkisar antara 0,35 s.d. 2,20 m pada kedalaman terletak antara 8,35 s.d. 389,30 m. Pengukuran kandungan gas di daerah penelitian hanya dilakukan pada 6 lapisan (seam) batubara yang ditemukan di kedalaman 235,05 s.d. 389,30 m dikarenakan pada kedalaman tersebut diperkirakan kandungan gas metana batubara memiliki potensi yang cukup baik. Ketebalan batubara yang dilakukan pengukuran kandungan gasnya berkisar antara 0,38 s.d. 2,20 m dengan notifikasi lapisan (seam) batubara dari bawah ke atas yaitu C, E, F, H, I dan J. Hasil pengukuran kandungan gas metana batubara di daerah penelitianbervariasi antara 5,07 s.d. 102,75 standard cubic feet/ton atau 0,14 s.d. 3,19 m/ton dengan nilai kalori berkisar antara 2,357 s.d. 6,840 kalori/gr.
