Coastal and marine geomorphology between Albenga and Savona(NW Mediterranean Sea, Italy)

Abstract: In this paper, we present a map describing the main geomorphological features of the coastal and marine area between the towns of Albenga and Savona (Ligurian Sea, NW Mediterranean) corresponding to a coastal stretch of 40 km. To produce this map, we collated data from the literature, orthophotos, perspective photos, multibeam and side scan sonar data, and undertook direct surveys to ground truth data obtained using indirect techniques. We divided the information into nine thematic layers, including bathymetry… Show more

“…Gallinara (or Gallinaria) Island lies in the western Ligurian Sea, north‐western Mediterranean (Figure a), about 1.5 km from the mainland (Rovere et al, ). The nearshore hydrodynamics of the island are mainly controlled by waves coming from the south‐east and the south, with both directions having fetches of about 200 km and significant wave heights of about 2 m (Vacchi, Montefalcone, Bianchi, Morri, & Ferrari, ).…”

In the MPA Tavolara‐Capo Coda Cavallo (northeast Sardinia), the geological switch between limestone and granite is not associated with significant changes in meadow spatial patterns (Rovere et al ., ).…”

“…When combined these data in a unique cartographic product, they can be easily used by decision-makers to assess territorial and marine features and locate vulnerable areas in need of conservation and protection. Recently, significant efforts were made to synthesize the outputs of research studies in a useful format for coastal managers (De Muro, Batzella, De Falco, & Porta, 2010;De Muro, Ibba, & Kalb, 2016;Rovere et al, 2015;Stojanovic & Ballinger, 2009). From this effort, several maps were realized by the scientific community to identify coastal hazards and/or coastal vulnerability (De Muro, Batzella, Kalb, & Pusceddu, 2008;De Muro, Pusceddu, & Kalb, 2010;Mendoza & Jimenez, 2008;Olita et al, 2012;Rovere et al, 2013).…”
